Descriptions

Located in the golden sands of Rajasthan, Desert National Park is one of the largest national parks in India, stretching over 3,100 sq. km near Jaisalmer. This vast expanse of the Thar Desert showcases the beauty of a barren landscape teeming with life.
Despite its arid terrain, the park supports an incredible variety of wildlife adapted to survive in extreme conditions. Sand dunes, rocky outcrops, salt lakes, and grasslands make up its terrain — painting a stunning picture of nature’s resilience.
The park is also known as a haven for bird watchers, especially those who come to witness the Great Indian Bustard, one of the rarest birds in the world and the state bird of Rajasthan.

Flora

The flora of the Desert National Park is sparse but specially adapted to withstand scorching heat and water scarcity. The vegetation mainly consists of xerophytic plants (plants that thrive in dry conditions), such as:

  • Cactus and sewan grass
  • Ber (Ziziphus mauritiana)
  • Khejri (Prosopis cineraria)
  • Aak (Calotropis gigantea)
  • Babul (Acacia nilotica)

These hardy plants not only prevent soil erosion but also serve as a crucial food source for desert wildlife.

Fauna

The park is rich in fauna, with several species uniquely adapted to desert life.
Some of the commonly sighted animals include:

  • Desert Fox, Chinkara (Indian Gazelle), Blackbuck, and Hedgehogs
  • Desert Cat, Wolf, and Caracal (rare)
  • Monitor Lizards, Russell’s Viper, and other reptiles

For bird lovers, the park is a paradise, home to both resident and migratory birds such as:

  • Great Indian Bustard (critically endangered)
  • Short-toed Eagles, Laggar Falcons, Vultures, and Kestrels
  • Sandgrouse, Partridges, and Bee-eaters

During winter, the area attracts flocks of migratory birds from far-off regions, making it a perfect spot for ornithologists and photographers.
