Flora

Tropical evergreen trees like teak and rosewood as well as Indian kino trees and sandalwood thrive in the flora of the reserve, which also contains moist deciduous forests. Another notable feature are the orchids, medicinal plants, and ferns that grow on the dense canopy. Bamboo and other grassland varieties also flourish on the forest floor. Additionally, the aqua ecosystem is enriched by boating facilities of the Periyar River and Periyar Lake.

Fauna

The elusive Bengal tigers reside in Periyar along with easily spotted Indian elephants, which have a great proportion of the population in the reserve. Other mammals include Indian bison, sambar deer, wild boars, sloth bears, and Nilgiri langurs. The reserve and the lake are also teeming with a variety of over two hundred and sixty birds like the Nilgiri langur, majesty of the Indian breeze and other kingfishers and eagles. Furthermore, mugger crocodiles and a range of freshwater fish can also be found in the rivers and lake.
